Interview w Dr. James J. Elist, talking about his Penuma® implant and male sexual-Part 1

So, here’s where it gets serious, medical, scientific. We have had a few of those moments on our show, I am thinking specifically of our episode #37 with Dr. Karyn Eilber, inventor of the Glissant lube (and other ‘personal’ products) or when we spoke to Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey way back in our episode #13 about what’s going on in our hearts and heads when it comes to sex . Chris and I (and we hope our listeners) learn so much in these instances. And we keep on learning. Like I did when I interviewed Dr. James J. Elist, inventor of the Penuma® implant, “the first FDA-cleared aesthetic penile implant for penis augmentation.” You will see I have broken this interview into two parts, as it is quite extensive and with information like this, I don’t like to hit a potential reader with too much all at once…especially here, where the blogs tend to be lighter in nature. Usually. But the below is great stuff, from a very smart guy about a surely serious subject.

So, with no further preamble, here is part 1 of my interview with Dr. James J. Elist, talking about his Penuma® implant and male sexual health.

First and foremost, doctor, can you tell us what the Penuma implant is and how does it work?

Penuma is the first FDA-cleared aesthetic penile implant for penis augmentation. It’s made of soft medical-grade silicone, and it’s surgically inserted under the penile girth to expand the size of the penis. The surgical procedure takes about 45-60 minutes, and the network of Penuma surgeons have performed thousands of procedures to date with high self-reported patient and partner satisfaction.

How/why did you come to invent it?

After observing the various shortcomings of previous male enhancement methods, such as fat injection, dermal grafts and fillers, I sought a different approach. Taking a cue from breast augmentation and drawing upon my experience treating erectile dysfunction (ED) with prosthetics, I thought of using soft silicone implants that wouldn’t suffer reabsorption.

Treating the unfavorable outcome of other surgeries will teach you a lot about what you should not do. I worked with engineers and scientists to ensure that Penuma is designed not to affect the natural look and function of the penis, and it can be removed safely if need be, unlike the previous methods. I successfully developed the Penuma implant and received multiple FDA clearances, beginning in 2004. Ever since, the Penuma implant has transformed the lives of thousands of patients. We have made many improvements to surgical techniques and protocols pre and post-surgery since, and now I am proud to introduce a scientifically backed solution with a strong track record to all men who are seeking to boost their confidence and self-esteem.

I fascinated in the nuts and bolts of managing scientific research to product development to actually marketing the product. Can you take us through a few steps of this process?

The idea was born out of necessity. Many men have been in search of a solution to augment the size of their penis, and I personally witnessed the damage that can occur when doing penile fat injections, fillers, pumps, pills, etc.

I worked with engineers and well-reputed university professors to develop the first prototypes and to conduct cadaver studies. I relied heavily on my experience of using penile prostheses for decades for the treatment of ED.

Over the years, we’ve continued to make enhancements to the design of the implant as well as the surgical method. We’re so proud to have helped so many men over the years from around the world.

Do you think there has been a rise in ED in the modern age (surely in the last few decades), or did we just not hear about this problem years ago…certainly there weren’t drugs and implants to combat it, I know. And if there is a rise in ED, why do you think that is?

Yes. It’s estimated that the prevalence of erectile dysfunction has increased with the aging of the population, and may also be increasing due to increasing rates of risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Additionally, increased awareness and reduced stigma surrounding the condition may also result in increased reporting and diagnosis. Preliminary studies also seem to indicate that rates of ED increased during COVID-19 by 20%. A few theories are that COVID can cause fatigue and mild depression (which contributes to ED) and that COVID might decrease levels of testosterone or affect small vessels, including in the penis.
